Global reinsurer Berkley Re has consistently demonstrated its commitment to promoting education, development and growth within the insurance industry. This is exhibited through its continuing sponsorship of the Reinsurance International Study Course (RISC) program which is run by ANZIIF.

Nurturing Industry Understanding

As the insurance industry grapples with inflation, impacts of the Russia-Ukrainian war and the after effects of Covid-19, the need for fostering understanding and education within the industry has gained prominence. “Berkley Re has been a sponsor of RISC for many years as we feel strongly about giving back to the industry and encouraging learning and development,” says Sally Nickerson, Senior Underwriter, Berkley Re. “We see the value in promoting reinsurance to the wider industry as it can be an area that isn’t always well understood.” Nickerson is a member of the organising committee and is an advisor at the course where she guides a group of attendees through the programme.

An Inside Look into the Reinsurance Study Course

RISC attendees are immersed in a dynamic environment of learning and hands-on experience. “The training course is run over 4 days and is a combination of presentations and hands-on syndicate group work,” Nickerson explained, highlighting the role of real-life case studies in the training program.

However, it’s not all work and no play. The course includes various activities to unwind and network. Nickerson underscored the balance, stating, “Whilst the course is hard work, we also try and make the experience fun for those attending.”

Skill-building for the Future

The Berkley Re team believe that one of the unique features of RISC is that the course is not limited to just technical knowledge; it is the all-round development that attendees gain. The course teaches delegates teamwork, collaboration, decision making, and negotiation, all integral skills that can be applied in their respective roles. With the reinsurance industry being so relationship driven, the relationships formed at RISC are not only beneficial for future work endeavours but real friendships are often made at the course.

Broadening Career Opportunities

Interestingly, the program doesn’t limit itself to underwriting. “I think there can be a misconception that this course is only for those in underwriting but we get delegates attending from all areas of the insurance industry,” Nickerson stated, emphasising the program’s comprehensive design.

Personal Growth in Reinsurance

Personal stories like Sally’s serve as an inspiration for those embarking on their journey in reinsurance. Recalling her career trajectory, she said, “10 years ago I started my reinsurance journey as an underwriting assistant. I am now a Senior Underwriter working on the casualty treaty portfolio.”

Berkley Re’s sponsorship of the ANZIIF traineeship program signifies a major investment in the future of the industry. The initiative is not just about understanding the world of reinsurance; it is about shaping its future leaders.
